SCRIPTURE READING: LUKE 1: 5-25, 57-66

FOCUS: “For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother’s womb.” (Luke 1: 15)

MEMORY VERSE: “All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.” (1 Corinthians 10: 23)

In our Focal Scripture, the Angel of the Lord told Zachariah that the son he was about to bear, would be great in the sight of the Lord, but must neither drink wine nor strong drink. God was about to bring forth a great child through Zachariah and his wife Elizabeth, but an instruction was given about what he must never be involved in. The greatness that God was bringing forth, was not allowed to be like every other man.

Friend, if truly you desire the greatness that comes from God, then you may need to get ready to not be like every other man. The greatness that God bestows on you will force you not to do what everyone does. The greatness that comes from God will compel you to avoid what some other people may consider acceptable. The greatness that God brings will put you in a place where things may be lawful for others but not expedient for you.

Apart from being instructed not to drink wine or strong drink, the Angel of the Lord announced that John will be filled with the Holy Ghost from his mother’s womb. The Holy Ghost was not yet freely released at this time, but John was to have it ahead of others. John was to enjoy a present that should be the future of others. The greatness that God brings may cause you to journey into the future that others are yet to arrive at. The greatness from God requires you to be ahead in spiritual matters.

If truly you desire the greatness that comes from God, then glean from the template that was given to John. Discern what God does not want you to do even if it has not broken any law of men, or of God. Discern who God wants you to become even if it is not what your generation expects you to be. Discern the path that heaven has crafted for you and walk in it. Discern who God wants you to be and embrace it.

Don’t abandon the greatness that God wants to make happen in you and through you, because you want to be like every other man. Do away with whatever is not compatible with the greatness God has crafted for you; and dare to embrace what God would have you embrace.
