SCRIPTURE READING: LUKE 15: 11-32
FOCUS: “And he said unto him, Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine.” (Luke 15: 31)
MEMORY VERSE: “See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise,” (Ephesians 5: 15)
When the elder brother of the prodigal son protested to the father on account of the celebration that heralded the return of the prodigal son, the father said, “all I have is yours”. The prodigal son had asked for the portion of goods that should pertain to him, and his father gave him a portion, which he wasted. By the father’s affirmation, what was left belonged to the elder brother. Impliedly, the prodigal son had no extra portion.
Friend, beware of those moments when you waste the portion that heaven has bestowed on you. Be careful not to lose the portion you have been given. Be careful not to misuse the opportunities that God has given you. Be careful not to misuse the resources that God gave you. Be careful not to make a mess of the access that God gave you. Be careful not to allow what God put in your hand to be reduced to rubbles.
As exciting as the return of the prodigal son was, his father’s affirmation to the elder brother implied that there was not going to be another portion given to the prodigal son. He had taken his portion, and whereas he was welcomed back and given a place in the house, he had lost his portion. The danger of losing or wasting what the Lord has given you is that you may not get back all of it even when you return to God.
What is that resource of heaven that you have been given? Treat it with the importance it deserves. Treat your giftings with the importance they deserve. Treat your opportunities with the carefulness and humility they deserve. Treat your resources with circumspection. Don’t be careless with what you have because you did not labour much to have it. Don’t waste what heaven bestowed on you freely.
There is no wisdom in wasting what heaven trusted you with. Stop wasting your portion. It may be convenient to waste what you received, but it may not always be possible to have it back.
